This proposal aims to investigate how specific collaborative learning strategies affect student engagement levels in English as a Foreign Language classrooms at the secondary school level. The primary objective is to identify which collaborative structures most effectively enhance behavioral, emotional, and cognitive engagement among students with varying language proficiencies.
The study will be conducted over one academic semester in two urban public secondary schools. Participants will include approximately 120 students aged 14-16, divided into four intact classes. The research employs a mixed-methods design. Quantitative data will be gathered through pre
The intervention involves implementing three distinct collaborative learning structures: 1) Structured Academic Controversy on topical debates, 2) Jigsaw projects for reading comprehension, and 3) Peer Review workshops for writing tasks. Each class will experience a cycle of all three structures. Key variables examined include frequency and quality of student interaction, on-task behavior, self-reported interest and confidence, and depth of conceptual understanding demonstrated in outputs.
Potential challenges include controlling for teacher implementation differences and student grouping dynamics. The study expects to find that well-structured collaborative tasks with individual accountability and positive interdependence significantly boost all dimensions of engagement, particularly for middle-proficiency learners. Findings will contribute to practical EFL pedagogy by providing a tested framework for designing collaborative activities that move beyond mere group work to foster genuine engagement.
