Thanksgiving is a major national holiday celebrated primarily in the United States and Canada. It’s a day centered around giving thanks for the blessings of the harvest and the past year.
In the United States, it’s observed on the fourth Thursday of November. The most common historical origin story traces it back to a 1621 harvest feast shared between the English Pilgrims of Plymouth Colony and the Wampanoag people. However, the modern holiday’s fixed date was established much later, during the Civil War, by President Abraham Lincoln’s proclamation in 1863. Canadian Thanksgiving, with different historical roots, is celebrated on the second Monday of October.
The core tradition of Thanksgiving is a large family and friends gathering for a special feast. The centerpiece of this meal is almost always a roasted turkey, accompanied by side dishes like stuffing, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, gravy, and various vegetables. Pumpkin pie is the classic dessert. Before eating, it’s common for people to share what they are thankful for.
Beyond the meal, the day is associated with several other customs. In the U.S., watching the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City and American football games are popular television events. The day after Thanksgiving, known as Black Friday, unofficially marks the beginning of the Christmas shopping season with major sales.
At its heart, Thanksgiving is less about the historical specifics and more about taking a moment to pause, come together with loved ones, and express gratitude. It’s a holiday dedicated to family, food, and appreciation.
