How to Improve English Reading Skills in Senior High School
Reading can feel tough in high school, especially with longer texts and new words. But getting better at it is totally doable with some simple steps.
First, pick stuff you actually like. Hate textbook passages? Try English news about sports or games, short stories, or even movie reviews. Interest makes tough material easier. Start with short articles. Don’t jump into a hard novel right away. Read one or two paragraphs well, not ten pages poorly.
New words are everyone’s headache. Don’t just memorize lists. When you see a new word in your reading, try to guess its meaning from the sentences around it first. Then, check the dictionary. Write down the word, its meaning, and the sentence you found it in. This helps you remember it better.
Speed matters, but understanding matters more. Don’t just skim with your eyes. Use a pen or your finger to guide your reading. This keeps you focused. After each paragraph, ask yourself, “What was this mainly about?” Say the main idea in your head using simple English or even Chinese. This checks if you really get it.
Practice is key. Set aside 15-20 minutes every day just for English reading. Be consistent. One hour on Sunday isn’t as good as short daily practice. You can also form a small study group. Discuss what you read with a friend. Explaining something to others is the best test of your own understanding.
Finally, don’t fear mistakes. Misunderstanding a paragraph is normal. The goal is progress, not perfection. Every bit of reading adds up. Be patient with yourself, keep trying these methods, and you’ll see your skills grow step by step.
