This summer vacation was truly special. Unlike previous years filled with endless video games and lazy afternoons, I decided to make a change. I enrolled in a two-week volunteering program at our local community library.

My main job was to help organize books and assist young children during the weekly story time. At first, it was challenging. Remembering the book categorization system was tough, and some kids were very energetic. My English teacher, Ms. Chen, always says, "Practice makes perfect, and stepping out of your comfort zone helps you grow." She was right. I practiced explaining the simple picture books in English to myself every night. Gradually, I became more confident. During the story sessions, I started using more gestures and funny voices to describe the characters. Seeing the children's excited smiles and hearing their laughter was my biggest reward.

Besides volunteering, I also set a personal goal: to read one English novel. I chose "Charlotte's Web." It was difficult at the beginning, and I had to look up many words. But I persisted, using a dictionary and taking notes. Slowly, the story of Wilbur the pig and Charlotte the spider pulled me in. I wasn't just learning new vocabulary like "humble," "radiant," and "terrific"; I was also deeply moved by the themes of friendship and sacrifice. Finishing the book gave me an incredible sense of achievement.

Of course, there was still time for fun. I went swimming with my family almost every weekend and had a fantastic barbecue with my cousins. But these activities felt even more enjoyable because I had been productive during the week.

This vacation taught me that balance is key. Contributing to the community, challenging myself with a good book, and spending quality time with family all combined to create a meaningful and unforgettable break. I didn't just pass the time; I learned, helped others, and grew a little more. It was a summer well spent.
