My Hobby: Exploring the World Through Books
My hobby is reading. It’s not something flashy, but it’s my favorite way to spend time. I don’t just read for school or to get information. I read for fun, to escape, and to see the world from a thousand different eyes.
It all started when I was little. My mom would read picture books to me every night. I loved the colors and the silly stories. Then, I learned to read myself, and a whole new door opened. My first real chapter book was about a talking dog detective. I finished it in one weekend, curled up in my favorite chair. That feeling of getting lost in a story, of completely forgetting about time, was magic. I was hooked.
Now, I read everything I can get my hands on. I love fantasy novels because they take me to lands with dragons and magic. I enjoy mysteries where I can try to solve the puzzle before the detective does. Sometimes, I read biographies of interesting people, like scientists or artists, to understand how they saw the world. I even have a soft spot for old comic books my dad gave me. Each genre is like a different tool. Fantasy is my imagination’s fuel, mysteries are my brain’s workout, and historical fiction is my time machine.
I have my little routines. My best reading time is in the evening, after I finish my homework. I make a cup of tea, find a cozy spot—usually the window seat in my room or a beanbag in the corner—and just dive in. On rainy weekends, I can easily spend the whole afternoon with a stack of books. I also keep a simple notebook. I don’t write long reviews, just the title, the author, and maybe one sentence about what I liked or a cool quote I want to remember. Looking back through it is like looking at a map of where my mind has traveled.
People sometimes ask me why I don’t just watch the movie or play video games instead. For me, reading is different. When you read, you are the director, the costume designer, and the special effects team all in one. The writer gives you the words, but you build the characters’ faces, the sound of their voices, and the look of the castle on the hill. No two people imagine a story exactly the same way. That active creation inside my own head is the best part. It makes the experience personal and powerful.
This hobby has given me more than just entertainment. It has quietly improved my vocabulary and my writing without me even trying. More importantly, it has taught me about people. By reading stories from different cultures, or about characters who are nothing like me, I learn about empathy. I feel what they feel. It’s like practicing how to understand others, one story at a time. It makes the real world a bigger and more interesting place.
I don’t need fancy equipment for my hobby, just a book and some quiet. Libraries are my treasure chests, and bookstores are my happy places. My friends and I sometimes swap books and talk about them, which is always fun. My hobby is simple, but it’s mine. It’s my passport to endless adventures, all from the comfort of my favorite chair. As long as there are stories to be told, I’ll have my nose buried in a book, happily exploring one page at a time.
