Thanksgiving morning always smells like cinnamon and roasted turkey. This year, I was in charge of setting the table while Mom wrestled with the oven. As I placed the last fork, I noticed my grandfather sitting alone, looking at old photos.

After our huge meal, instead of rushing to watch football, I sat with him. He pointed to a black-and-white picture of a young man holding a toolbox. "My first Thanksgiving in this country," he said. "I had two sandwiches and a strong desire to build a better life." He spoke of working long hours, missing his family back home, and the kindness of a stranger who shared a Thanksgiving meal with him when he had almost given up.

Listening to him, I realized something. Thanksgiving wasn't just about the perfect turkey or the pumpkin pie we spent hours making. It was about my grandfather's sandwiches and that stranger's shared plate. It was about remembering the "almost not enough" to truly appreciate the "more than enough" we had now.

Later, when we all shared what we were thankful for, I didn't just say "family and food." I said, "I'm thankful for Grandpa's story." Because his journey, his two sandwiches, made every bite of our feast taste deeper. It turned the holiday from a checklist of traditions into a real feeling—a warm, grateful weight in my heart, heavier and happier than any slice of pie.
